Elementary Overview

Building A Foundation On The Rock.

At Los Gatos Christian School, we provide our students with a well-rounded experience, allowing them to flourish academically, artistically, athletically, and spiritually. Our challenging academics, robust enrichment programs, and dynamic athletics are all taught from a Biblical worldview. Our emphasis is on building godly character and developing the student’s healthy self-image, understanding that God has created each student uniquely and that He has a divine plan for each life.

Students enjoy a wide variety of daily activities with in the security of a self-contained classroom. Families are encouraged to participate in a variety of all school events, including Family Movie Night, World’s Fair, Spelling Bee, Speech Meet, Jog-A-Thon, and the Math Olympics.

It is the privilege of Los Gatos Christian School to partner with parents in providing students with a Christ-centered education as we “Prepare students for Life.”

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Los Gatos Christian School’s philosophy is to approach educating students with a Biblical worldview. The faculty and staff are committed to respect and care for each student while providing an environment of academic excellence that prepares students for a Christ-centered life.

OUR STANCE ON HOMEWORK

Los Gatos Christian School strives to reach a reasonable balance between class work and homework. Homework assignments are intended to reinforce and extend what’s being taught in the classroom and serve as a tool for review of these concepts, as well as to assess student understanding of classroom instruction. Getting into a homework routine can motivate students to develop good work habits, and increase the opportunity for individual initiative and personal responsibility.

We play a role in the the assistance of parents in the raising of their children, which is why we have no desire to compromise family time. However, a mutual goal for academic excellence means that a certain amount of homework is necessary. In order to maintain high academic standards, students will need to spend more time on studies than the time that is available in class.

LOS GATOS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HAS SET THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS WHEN ASSIGNING HOMEWORK FOR THEIR STUDENTS:

Elementary grades expected homework minutes (exclusive of reading and special projects)

KINDERGARTEN – 10 MINS
GRADE 1 – 10 MINS
GRADE 2 – 20 MINS
GRADE 3 – 30 MINS
GRADE 4 – 40 MINS
GRADE 5 – 50 MINS

LEARNING IN A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT

Our mission at Los Gatos Christian School is to provide the richest possible learning experience to students with varying academic capabilities. Core academic subjects are designed to challenge students who are on grade level and advanced learners. Because we strive to achieve the goal of a 1:20 teacher/student ratio in K-2nd and a 1:25 ratio in 3rd-8th the pace of academic progress is both consistent and challenging.

COMMON CORE AND BENCHMARKING

Private schools pay close attention to Common Core and state standards and traditionally use them as a starting point; however, we set the bar far above the minimum state standards as an expectation for student learning. We are not bound by the same constraints as public schools and have the ability to select curriculum and course materials from a variety of publishers which best support our educational goals for each grade level.

+ ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Elementary students participate in enrichment programs designed to provide our students with an exceptionally well-rounded education. Each week, students are given the opportunity to enhance their skills and develop their passion in the areas of Art, Music, Technology, STEAM activities, Spanish and Library.

ART
LGCS students are introduced to the elements and principles of design through different media. Students learn to hone their skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture, and will study the impact of famous artists’ works. As they progress, they’ll learn linear perspective, composition, explore different drawing media, and advanced color theory. Students receive art instruction twice a month—an average of 60 minutes per session.

MUSIC
We are truly proud of the music program at LGCS. Students from Kindergarten – 3rd grade receive instruction twice a week for 30 minutes each session, while 4th and 5th graders attend music classes once a week for 45 minutes. All students in the program perform in the annual Christmas Concert and Spring Musical, as well as grade-level mini-concerts.

OUR INSTRUCTION FOCUSES ON:

KINDERGARTEN

Students learn notation and rhythm through games, colors, numbers, and improvisation. The students practice and understand the steady beat, high and low, soft and loud, quarter note, and quarter rest.

Elementary classes also share iPad carts so that students have access to touch technology in their classrooms. As part of our STEAM emphasis, elementary students also access the Digital Arts Learning Center and participate in weekly MakerSpace challenges designed by middle school students. LGCS Students learn to think critically and use problem-solving skills while using today’s technology tools to find solutions.

OUR INSTRUCTION FOCUSES ON:

KINDERGARTEN – 2ND GRADE

Students are taught foundational skills and learn to navigate the MAC operating system. They focus on grade level appropriate activities using programs such as Word, Excel, and Power Point. Students complete projects that are integrated with classroom subjects and focus on becoming confident communicators and good digital citizens in a tech savvy world. The use of Ollie robots, podcasting, Google Drive and document collaboration are just some of the ways our students are demonstrating their love of 21st Century Learning skills.

3RD – 5TH GRADE

Students continue to build on the foundational tools learned in K – 2nd grades. Additionally, they are taught to effectively navigate the PC operating system and are challenged in the area of design thinking, creating 3-D models, testing protocols and developing prototypes to complete the design process. STEAM Principles of engineering and design are emphasized and allow students to use technology to create their own vision.

+ FAITH & SERVICE

PUTTING FAITH INTO PRACTICE, EVERYDAY.

At Los Gatos Christian School, we all work to create an environment that allows students to experience the love of God, pursue His purpose for their lives, and become more Christ-like throughout their academic endeavors. We practice our faith regularly and have developed programs throughout the year that are designed to encourage the growth of each student’s personal relationship with God.

DAILY BIBLE CLASS

Students participate in biblical studies at every grade level with weekly memorization of Bible verses and interactive lessons and curriculum. Additionally, our teachers weave relevant, and grade-level appropriate biblical perspectives into all course materials.

WEEKLY CHAPEL

Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade attend elementary chapel each week on Tuesday afternoons. Led by our dynamic Head of School, Mr. Torode, a focus on developing positive character traits is emphasized. A variety of special speakers visit throughout the year to encourage students to become passionate in their pursuit of living out their Christian faith.

DEVOTIONS AND PRAYERS

As a team, it’s important for us to pray together. The LGCS faculty and staff meet for devotions and prayers three times a week. The “Moms in Prayer” parent organization meets on a weekly basis to support the LGCS community through intentional prayer.

WATER BAPTISM

Easter Chapel presents the opportunity for children in 2nd grade and older to publicly profess their faith through water baptism. Interested students complete a questionnaire and meet with the Head of School to take part in this milestone step of faith.

LGCS GIVES BACK

LOS GATOS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE A LONG, RICH HISTORY OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY FINANCIALLY SUPPORTING COMMENDABLE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. EACH YEAR STUDENTS EMBARK ON AN ALL-SCHOOL EFFORT TO DEVELOP A HABIT OF CHARITABLE GIVING AND SERVICE TOWARDS OTHERS.

Some of the organizations we supported over the past decade include: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Second Harvest Food Bank, The JW House, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Todd Beamer Foundation, Hurricane Katrina Relief, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. In addition to financial support, each class adopts a service project and partners with local organizations to make a difference in our community.

OUR COMMITMENT TO STANDARDIZED TESTING

MAP Growth Standardized Testing

Standardized Testing is administered to all students in K -8th grades.

Los Gatos Christian School administers the MAP Growth Test. This assessment is available to Public and Private Christian schools across the United States and around the world. The MAP Growth test measures what students know and what they are ready to learn next. The test dynamically adjusts to each student’s performance creating a personalized assessment experience that accurately measures performance. Administered three times a year for timely information to help teachers teach, students learn, and administrators lead.

MAP Growth is aligned to Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.

Because achievement testing is such a critical component of our school’s instructional program, MAP Growth and the complete assessment program offer your child’s teacher valuable information about their academic progress. It also becomes a teaching resource for our faculty, allowing us to collect student data that, in turn, helps us make wise decisions in meeting the learning needs of each student individually.

OUR SUPPORT SERVICES

The Educational Care Program (ECP) provides support for students, parents and teachers. The ECP team works collaboratively to reinforce the excellence of Los Gatos Christian School so that children can reach their full potential in a confident and guided manner. By offering limited intervention programs to identified students with learning challenges, the ECP support team works with parents and teachers to assure that student needs are met thoughtfully and effectively so that change and success is achieved.

If a student is experiencing academic difficulty, the teacher and parents are expected to contact the ECP department. ECP offers the following academic support at an additional fee to those students who have been referred by the teacher through the ECP process:

ON-CAMPUS TUTORING

REFERRAL FOR EDUCATIONAL TESTING

Los Gatos Christian School does not offer any special education resource classrooms. Academic tutoring outside of normal school hours, during the school year, is available from several of our teachers. Tutoring may be arranged through the classroom teacher.
